About the Artist

Plein Air Painter
Artist Statement: The challenge of painting outdoors is addictive. It involves intense concentration. When I successfully focus on the crucial elements of a composition, I arrive at a serene perception of being part of a brief episode in time. While recording my impressions, sunlight moves, the temperature drops, wind sculpts the sky in a spectrum of colors. Often, I am a solo witness to the spectacular drama of late afternoon. I enjoy painting with oils on location and working in my studio when the seasons transform the landscape. New projects include oil and color pencil portraits, figurative and small oil paintings.

Mountain Time: Paintings by Janet Marie Yeates was a 2015 solo Catskill-area exhibition in September/October curated by master artist Stanley Maltzman. 2015 Invitational Show in Glens Falls, NY, sponsored by NCA/Rare eARTh Gallery and Events was on display from early May to mid-July.
Please look for the new NorthCountryARTS logo which I designed. It is on the web site (NorthCountryARTS.org), the 2015 exhibits rack card, show announcements, signage, and more. This is an energetic organization with great programming dedicated to promoting regional artists and artisans. Membership is open to artists and patrons. Many thanks to Fred Holman, Jacquiline Touba, and the NorthCountryARTS board and members for a great 2014 exhibition season in Chestertown, Glens Falls, and Salem, NY. The Art in Chestertown Bright Holidays show was very successful; thanks to all the patrons who invested in regional art and supported North Warren's 'Shop Outside the Box.'
2014 Recap
My first trip to Seneca Lake for the 2014 Seneca Lake Plein Air Painting Festival was delightful! Kim Aliperti and Joyce Toher and their active committee members planned a wonderful week of painting, exhibiting, and socializing with a friendly group of 30 artists. The community welcomed us and generous hosts made our stay extra special. Although the wind blew hard for a day, I completed five new paintings.
I participated in the New York Plein Air Painters Retreat at Great Camp Sagamore in September. We had wonderful weather and I enjoyed the company of a dozen congenial artists.
I enjoyed painting at the Morristown Public Library Plein Air Festival and Saranac Lake Artworks' Adirondack Plein Air Festival in August. Eric Rhoads' Publisher's Invitational at Paul Smith's in June was an inspiring event.
The First Sacandaga Valley Arts Network (SVAN) ART TRAIL took place Saturday and Sunday, AUGUST 16 & 17, 2014.
Corey Pitkin and I painted on location at the Chamber Visitor Center, Vail Mills. The painting I completed on location is titled Souper Rhythms (the vegetables became a delicious soup, thanks to my friends at Johnson's Family Farm in Northville).
2014 JURIED SHOWS: NorthWind Fine Arts in Saranac Lake, 1st Annual Regional Juried Art Show: Juror Peter Russom chose two of my oil paintings: May Morning and Between Trains. Lake Placid Center for the Arts (LPCA) 2014 Juried Art Show: two of my early summer paintings were on exhibit: Solar Cottage and May in the Hamlet. Paul Smith's College VIC Plein Air Invitational ran through August. Curator Sandra Hildreth chose two of my paintings from the Publisher's Invitational Paint Week this June. Paul Smith's College VIC included Black Pond Odyssey in the Life on the Lakes show in July; jurors Shawn Halpern and Burdette Parks. Buck Moon Arts Festival, Fulton-Montgomery Community College, Johnstown, NY, Through September 12. Two paintings were juried into the show by Rachel Seligman. A painting I did during Plein Air–Vermont was accepted in the Masters Division in the 63rd Annual Central Adirondack Exhibition at VIEW, Old Forge. Cooperstown Art Associations's 2014 Essential Art Regional included one of my farm panoramas. Winter Air, a juried show at VIEW, Old Forge, included three of my snow paintings. Two plein air works painted last fall were accepted in the 16th Annual Juried Art Competition at Adirondack Artists' Guild, Saranac Lake. Juror: Laura von Rosk. Two smaller plein air alla prima paintings will be included in The Shirt Factory Gallery's Third Juried Small Works Show 2014. Juror: John Hampshire. Small Works Show 2014 at The Bennington, Bennington, VT, Into the Woods has been accepted for this national juried show which runs through December 21, 2014. thebennington.org. "Seasons" at Mimosa (see photo at bottom of page)
Janet’s paintings were featured at Mimosa Gallery, 489 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY, in October, 2013. "It was a great experience and I'm grateful to everyone who came to the reception, the luncheon, and visited during the month. Michelle LaLonde and staff created a wonderful exhibit in the beautiful and welcoming gallery. Thank you all so very much! Mimosa has closed, and it will be sorely missed, but we'll strive to keep the spirit alive. Best of luck to Michelle in her other creative endeavors.
Janet’s work has received numerous awards and has been shown in juried exhibitions at The Bennington Center for the Arts, Bennington, VT; Cooperstown Art Association’s National and Regional Juried Shows; Adirondack Artists’ Guild, Saranac Lake; Lake Placid Center for the Arts; and Mimosa Gallery, Saratoga Springs. Group shows include the Central Adirondack Art Show at View, Old Forge, and North Country Art Center’s Crandall Library and year-round Art in Chestertown exhibits.
Janet is a member of the Adirondack Mountain School of Painting, initiated at Plein Air Magazine/Eric Rhoads’ Adirondack Paint Weeks.
In 2013, she participated in several plein air events: Finger Lakes 2nd Annual Plein Air Festival in Canandaigua, NY; Adirondack Paint Week at Paul Smith’s; Morristown (NY) Plein Air Festival (Awarded Second Place); Adirondack Plein Air Festival in Saranac Lake (Awarded Honorable Mention); and the juried 4th Annual Plein Air–Vermont. Janet is an active member of NYPAP’s Mohawk Region Chapter and paints with other artists at historic and scenic locations and at annual New York Plein Air Painters (NYPAP) fall retreats. Her paintings were shown in July at Pendragon Theatre, Saranac Lake, NY.
In 2012, she attended festival/competitions in Canandaigua and Sackets Harbor (Awarded Honorable Mention). In August 2012, at her third Adirondack Plein Air Festival in Saranac Lake, she was awarded the Cover Art Award for a painting of the town’s restored train station. Between Trains is on the cover of the Saranac Lake Chamber of Commerce’s 2013–14 Visitors Guide, which Janet also designed. Last year she had solo shows in SVAN’s Gallery in Northville Public Library and at Alpine Lodge, North Creek.
Janet describes her motivation:
The challenge of painting outdoors is addictive.
Janet is a graphic artist specializing in book design and publications for artists, musicians, and arts and cultural organizations since 1991. She had a decade-long career as Executive Director of Schoharie County Arts Council. Janet studied drawing, painting, printmaking, and calligraphy at the High School of Music & Art, The Cooper Union, and Hunter College in New York City, earning a BFA.
